For the past few months COURAGE has been a frequent topic of conversation at the Morello's House...
Today, Elizabeth went to the doctor to get her 1 year check-up and shots. The last few times she has cried as soon as her doctor walks in, but I was very proud of her for holding her tears in until he actually started to look in her ears. I think all of the doctor visits we have has made Elizabeth a little more in tune to what is going to happen to her. After the doctor left the room I got her settled down and she fell asleep. Oh no! I thought this was the worst thing because the nurse was going to come in and give her shots. I was right! However, Elizabeth is a trooper. She did cry, I did give her tylenol (helps her not cry for long), and I did hold her, but by the time we walked to the front desk to make her next appointment she was fine. She even chose a sticker to take home. Elizabeth showed that she is courageous...
My Mom Lesson: Do not be so shocked when my one year old (who has always been a trooper) passes her 1 year shots with flying colors!

Storytime Lessons
It is snowing a lot today in Ohio, but Trent and I braved the snow to take Lizzie to the last winter storytime at the library. She had a lot of fun. She gets so excited when she is around other little children. She makes friends where ever she goes, sometimes she even helps me make friends. We moved to a different Church in November and I haven't really had a lot of chances to meet people. On Sunday, Lizzie let another woman hold her during Relief Society and I was glad because then it was easy for me to make conversation. I am really shy, but Elizabeth seems to be very outgoing. She acts shy for a few minutes, but after she gets use to someone she just smiles and acts like they are her best friend. I am SO blessed to have a daughter that is so friendly and well-behaved. I get comments all of the time from people telling me how well she behaves.
So, my Mom experience for today: I have learned that even at the young age of ten months I need to let me daughter experience independence. She wanted to roll around with all of the other children at storytime but I did not let her go too far. She gets frustrated. Finally at the end I just let her go explore and that is when she just rolled up to other children and mothers and made friends. It is really hard for me to realize that the more mobile she becomes the more she is going to want to explore her surroundings. I want her to stay little, but I know that I need to realize that this is not going to happen. She is growing up...almost a year old. I just cannot believe it!
I love you Elizabeth!

My Discoveries
Welcome to my blog. The purpose of this blog is to record my thoughts and lessons about being a Mom. I hope you enjoy reading the entries and return often.
I have the most beautiful, wonderful ten month old daughter, Elizabeth Guin. She fills my days with smiles and discoveries. I have always wanted to be a mother, but I never imagined that after becoming a mother I would discover how much joy I could have.
I have heard many mothers say after they have become mothers that they would love to go back to school or do something that would require them to go outside of their position as mother. I never understood this, but now that I am a mother I really do not understand why they would have that desire. I am not saying that being a mother is easy, in fact just the opposite. What I will say is that motherhood, for me at least, is the most rewarding "profession" that a woman could have.
What have I been up to as a Mom lately? Well, Elizabeth has had a total of four ear infections and a couple of colds. I have spent my days making her as warm as possible, giving her two different kinds of antibiotics, taking her to the doctor and bribing her to eat by giving her some spaghetti and oatmeal, both of which she loves. I am hoping that after the current ear infection she will not get sick anymore this winter, wishful thinking I am sure, but she has already spent the majority of the winter sick. If she gets one more ear infection the doctors will probably send her to an ENT doctor to see about tubes. Both my husband and I had to have tubes in our ears when we were younger.
I also take Elizabeth to Children's Hospital once or twice a week for therapy. She has what is called "right torticollis", which is something that requires physical therapy. I consider myself and Elizabeth extremely blessed with the physical therapist we were assigned. Anne is wonderful with Elizabeth. When Elizabeth started physical therapy she could not even sit up, in fact her muscles were not even working at all because she could not even begin to push herself up with her arms. Now, Elizabeth can sit up straight all by herself, roll around (she is extremely fast), push herself up to crawling position and lately she has wanted to crawl but cannot seem to figure out how to start moving. Thanks to Anne, Elizabeth is getting stronger and stronger.
When a Mom is not feeling well there is no button to press to make time stand still. The last couple of days my Mom has been helping me take care of Elizabeth. This is where I came up with the name of this blog: Mom's are Contagious. I think that once you are a Mom you are always a Mom. I have no idea where I would be without my Mom. Afterall, I have the greatest Mom and the best example of Motherhood. I hope to pass the same example to Elizabeth so that she will have the desire someday to become a Mom.
